Solid Quality

My children joke about this lamp after my husband told them that it was "hundreds of dollars." You won't laugh at this though. It is high quality child proof knock-over proof (so far) and makes a great reading lamp. This is also recommended to treat seasonal depression for the winter blues in gloomy weather. "Reach" is only 18" and the base is too light

Electrix Illumination 2225Z-BK Desk Lamp



Pros:



- Even though Electrix calls this an "incandescent" desk lamp 13w compact florescents (equivalent to 60 watt bulbs) or smaller will fit. Higher wattage mini or micro-mini compacts with larger diameter bottoms won't fit. However the lamp accepts virtually any incandescent bulb you might want to use. I've settled on a 75 watt incandescent since it projects plenty of white non-flickering light and comes on instantly.



- Although this lamp may at first glance appear similar to inexpensive models sold by stores such as Staples and Office Depot that's where the similarity ends. The Electrix (except for the base) is very good quality. The lamp head stays where you put it with no slipping down or frame drooping. The "plates" at the three points where the frame sections intersect are steel instead of the usual plastic found on cheaper models. The switch is the on/off type sold at most hardware or lamp stores in case it ever needs replacing. The paint is well done.



- An inner shade keeps the outer shade cooler and increases light output because it's white. With a 75 watt bulb the outer shade still gets hot but not so much that you can't hold it during adjustment. A 100 watt incandescent is too bright for my tastes plus the outer shade then gets too hot to handle. There is a small wire handle at the shade's bottom for movement if the heat bothers you. I'll switch to a 13w compact florescent in the summer since that type of bulb doesn't [also] heat the room.



Cons:



- The base isn't nearly heavy enough. Rotate the lamp only a little to one side and the whole thing falls over. The base support post must be at the furthest point away from the lamp head for any stability at all. Fully extend the lamp outward from there and it only reaches 18" (support post to center of bulb); not even close to the 28" claimed. At an 18" extension the lamp slowly falls over and you have to catch it to prevent it from crashing down. Raised all the way vertically with the shade pointed down the bottom of the shade is 19" above the desk.

- Although shoplet dot com shipped the lamp in the factory box rather than packing it in a secondary box it arrived undamaged.



Summary:



Shame on Electrix for the tip-over design which severely limits lamp head positioning. The cast iron weight in the base should be twice as heavy at least. I threw the factory base in the trash and mounted the lamp in a desk lamp clamp from my previous desk lamp. Now it won't tip over no matter how it's positioned or how far it's extended. Electrix is well aware of this design defect proven by the fact that they install a machine "stop" screw in the base plate to prevent the lamp from extending beyond 18" to reduce tip-overs. With a desk clamp supporting the lamp the stop screw can be removed allowing the lamp to extend up to 24" (if laid almost flat) and to also allow it move backward two more inches. I'm satisfied with the lamp ONLY because I happened to have that desk lamp clamp. Mounting the lamp in the supplied base was unacceptable to me. Three stars is generous.More detail ...

Verilux Brookfield Deluxe Natural Spectrum Desk & Table Lamp

The Verilux Brookfield desk and table lamp is attractive well-made and easily adjustable. Unfortunately it has a couple of design flaws resulting in my rating of only 3 stars.

First the Natural Spectrum Daylight compact fluorescent lamp that comes with the Brookfield is in my opinion unsuitable for reading or viewing color illustrations. While Verilux goes to great pains to convince the consumer that the lamp mimics the spectrum of natural daylight it actually produces an unpleasant bluish light that reminds me most of the blue-green glare of mercury vapor lamps used in some street lamps. The light the Verilux bulb produces may look like daylight to a photospectrometer but it does not at all resemble the light produced by the sun on a clear day to the human eye.

Colors whether in photos in a book or magazine or on textiles or plants are all shifted toward the blue end of the spectrum producing an uncomfortable artificial look. I cannot recommend Verilux bulbs for most purposes.

Second while the articulating arm positions the lamp housing easily and smoothly the reflector does not tip left or right. This is a minor quibble but would be nice to have and easy for the manufacturer to provide.

I elected not to return the lamp as I actually like its design. Instead I removed the lamp socket and replaced it with a socket to accept standard screw-base compact fluorescent (CFL) lamps. I installed a warm white CFL and am now very satified with the lamp's performance.

Verilux uses a proprietary two-pin bayonet socket. Replacement lamps to fit this socket are not widely available except from Verilux or its dealers. They tend to cost more than ordinary CFL lamps. I don't recommend replacing the socket unless you are quite handy with tools are are comfortable modifying the socket mounting and wiring the new socket.

Beautiful Lamp but have no idea if it works. Bulb was broken when I opened package. It is a 26 watt floresent bulb but was not the screw in type that is common in most stores. This one has a base with two pins that you put in two slots in the lamp. I called Verilux customer service and was told the bulb was readily available at Lowes Home Depot or Ace hardware. Well guess what when I took the base of the bulb to Lamps plusAce Hardware OSH Hardware Target and every local hardware store in Pasadena Calif. I only got a smile and a blank stare. I finally got someone with some knowledge at Staples who informed me that this bulb base with two pins is similar to some of the halogen bulbs they sell. He had never seen or heard of a 26 watt floresent pin based bulb. I called verilux (who did not ship the lamp Amazon did) and was informed that this type of bulb is new and they would send me a new one which would arrive in two weeks. In the meantime I have this beautiful new bronze lamp in my den that looks very nice but sheds no light. Who's to blame I don't know UPS Amazon ??? all I know there is no place to buy this type of bulb in the Pasadena San Gabriel Valley area of So. Calif. But this is why I buy most everything from Amazon they are efficient and the product is delivered to your front door and it spares me from from shopping at the local Target Best Buy etc. where I have yet to meet anyone with knowledge experience and an IQ above 3. UPDATE finally gotb bulb from Verilux and lamp is wonderful beautiful full spectrum light. Would highly recommend. More detail ...

Commercial Quality - very large

I purchased this magnifier/lamp for the purpose of using it to read small numbers on financial documents. I had been using a small hand-held magnifier with only a 2x or 3x power. This was very inadequate because it left my eyes feeling strained.



This magnifier/lamp looks much smaller in the picture. When the FedEx driver left it at my door I had to struggle to just lift the box up from the ground. It weighed 20 pounds. I opened the box and immediately noticed the magnifier/lamp was much larger than I had expected. It reminded me of the equipment that you see at the dentist's office i.e. the light-device that the dentist moves over your face to examine your teeth. It comes in two pieces that you have to assemble. Due to the weight and awkwardness of the two pieces you may need two people to put it together. I did it myself but it was a struggle.



The base of the magnifier/lamp takes up a large space on a table or desk. 12 inches wide and 10 inches deep with about the same size for the magnifier/light part of the unit. This size is really too large to leave on a regular desk so for now I put it on a side table. Also due to the size and weight of the unit it is very difficult to try to change the positioning of the unit over the documents. You really have to leave the magnifier/lamp in one spot and then change the positioning of your documents to suit the magnifier/lamp.



The magnifier itself is 5x so it does a great job of blowing up small numbers and the light illuminates the area extremely well. The size of the magnifier is large so you can pretty much see a whole 8x10 sized piece of paper through the magnifier without having to move the paper around as you would with a small hand-held magnifier.



Since the magnifier/lamp is so large I may not use it for the purpose that I originally bought it for but I will definitely keep it. This magnifier/lamp would be best suited in a laboratory or work shop environment but not an office environment.



One more thing - if you want to move it you're moving 20 pounds each time.



Also the plug is a 3-pronged one which can be important if you planned on using an extension cord
